Humility

Humility is central to developing any and all of the Christ like attributes that I have recently been talking about. Jesus Christ was the essence of Humility. He willingly submitted to the will of the Father, and gave Him all the Glory for his accomplishments. It is Humility and the lack of Humility that allowed Jesus to be selected as the Savior and cause Satan to be cast out of Heaven and become the wretched deceiver that he now is.

In Ether 12:27 we read "And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be Humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they Humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them." We are given weaknesses to protect us from ourselves, more or less. We are given our weaknesses to remind us to rely on the Lord and to seek Him in all we do. For if we do this then we will be filled with his Strength and by so being can accomplish all that he may ask of us.

"Humility is  willingness to submit to the will of the Lord and to give the Lord the honor for what is accomplished." PMG chapter 6 page 120. When you are truly Humble you acknowledge your constant need for His divine help and have gratitude for His blessings.  Humility is a sure way to develop Faith. When you are Humble and therefore know you have to rely on the Lord and His divine help, you will trust Him and have the assurance (ie. Faith) that His commandments are for your good, and that He will continually bless you. "You are confident that you can do whatever the Lord requires of you if you rely on Him." PMG chapter 6 page 120.

In D&C 136:32-33 we read "Let him that is ignorant learn wisdom by Humbling himself and calling upon the Lord his God, that his eyes may be opened that he may see, and his ears opened that he may hear; 33 For my Spirit is sent forth into the world to enlighten the Humble and contrite, and to the condemnation of the ungodly."  This is an awesome promise. If we are but Humble, and acknowledge the Lord, he has promised that He will teach us wisdom, that our eyes may be opened and that our ears may hear. Then we will be as those that walked with Christ, of which he said in Matthew 13: 16-17 "But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. 17 For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them." Also, this scripture in D&C clearly points out, at least to me that not being Humble, which is to say, being Prideful (the opposite of being Humble) is Ungodly, and the spirit is sent to condemn such.

"Humility will help you as you strive to be obedient, to work hard, and serve selflessly." PMG chapter 6 page 120. Humility is a building block to all other attributes of Christ. It is definitely not a weakness, and it is not shown by cowering, being submissive (at least not to the wrong people), or by being gutless. It is shown by being bold, courageous, standing with Faith, and being strong in the Faith at all times, in all places, and in all things. These things I say in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Somethings just make you happy.

Subway - Zion National Park
So, yesterday we had a guest speaker in my Entrepreneurial recreation class. He was Michael Kane, he is the general manager of Zion Pondarosa. Way awesome guy. Anyways, he talked a lot about entrepreneurism and what an entrepreneur needs to do to be successful. I just really enjoyed his comments and was well not all that suprized  but happy to see things applicable to all parts of your life in what he said. A few things he said were just good knowledge for any human to practice. Things like Knowing yourself and building a fortress of relationships and networks around yourself.

Thats all good and well, for a business but even a person, any person should strive to know themselves, and also build a fortress of relationships around them, not for business opportunities and help in that regard, but for spiritual and emotional wealth and health. I just enjoy that so much of life and this world is so deeply integrated. Another thing he said that struck a cord in me was that you should fearlessly show your strengths and quietly develop your weaknesses. How good is that! I think everyone should do likewise. Kinda makes me think about not hiding our talents right? He specifically said that each person in the room had one thing that we could do better then anyone else.

That is so Cool! I just wanna put down a few quotes that he said, I don't know who said these but, I like them.
"Character cannot be developed in ease and quite. only through experiences of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition and success achieved."
and
"The pain of discipline is less than the pain of regret."

He also asked us all to seriously consider what we want to do. In pondering that question, and this is on a completely secular level, just so you know, but really what I want to do is
-Travel the World
-See and Help others Travel the World
-Backpack, Hike, Climb, and Snowboard all over the world.
-have a positive effect on the world, make it a cleaner, better, healthier place.

Really those things are what I want to do, on a secular level,  now of course I have other goals, like be a successful father and provider for a future family, strengthen the members of the Church, always hold the priesthood worthily, but thats for another time and place. Anyways, I just really enjoyed the comments of Michael so, wanted to put some down here and stuff. however, now its time for me to go to work =).

Hope.

Hope is one of three keys that is repeatedly mentioned in the scriptures as required to obtain eternal life.
numerous times we read in the scriptures that faith, hope, and charity bring us unto God. Here are but a few references. Alma 7:24, Ether 12:28, D&C 4:5, D&C 12:8, D&C 18:19. And i'm sure there are many others, but I believe this is sufficient to show that Hope is certainly necessary to obtain eternal life.

In Lamentations 3:26 we read "It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord." Hope is extremely powerful. and it is good to always keep a hope in our hearts. When we have Faith we hope for things which we cannot see. Faith in the Lords promises will lead us to Hope for their fulfillment. That Hope will lead keep us through any trials we may face along the way, unless we let those trials diminish our Faith, thus extinguish our Hope.

Faith and Hope truly are different sides of the same coin, and maybe even closer in relation then that. When they are placed in correct teachings, and correct knowledge they can become very hard to distinguish one from the other. When we Hope for something we do it because we have Faith that it might come to pass. For instance, I Hope that I will obtain eternal life. I Hope for that because I have Faith in the redeeming power of the Lord Jesus Christ.

I don't believe true Hope can exist without Faith, and Faith cannot exist without breeding Hope. Lets say you have a friend, his name is bob, but his name is unimportant. Bob has a history of being late, forgetting important tasks and being a in general lazy. One day, you were supposed to bring cookies to a meeting, however, an emergency came up and you were not going to be able to make it to said meeting much less bring the cookies. You call Bob, as a last resort and ask him if he could, (since he was going to be attending the meeting anyways) pick up the cookies from your house and take them with him. Now at this point you may "hope" that he will do it, however seeing his track record you probably, and with good reason don't have much faith in your friends reliability. In this case, you might say see Hope can exist without Faith. However... really look at this situation. Hope brings peace, happiness, strength, confidence, optimism, enthusiasm, and patiences. Do you really have Hope that your friend will do as you asked? or do you have a nagging worry that he wont? again I say, True Hope cannot exist without Faith, and True Faith will always bring Hope.

In Ether 12:4 we read "Wherefore, whoso believeth in God might with surety hope for a better world, yea, even a place at the right hand of God, which hope cometh of faith, maketh an anchor to the souls of men, which would make them sure and steadfast, always abounding in good works, being led to glorify God."
Hope has the power to make us sure and steadfast, it is the anchor to the souls of men, if we were a boat, Faith would be throwing the anchor into the water, and Hope would be the anchor itself. The rock bottom that the anchor would rest on would be the Lord Jesus Christ.

I know that Jesus is the Christ, The anointed one of Israel. I know that He completed the Atonement, that He made it possible for us to return to live with our Father in Heaven. I know that the scriptures are the Word of God. These things I testify of in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Faith

First off what is faith? In Hebrews 11:1 we read that "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things no seen." Furthermore in the Lectures on Faith by Joseph Smith he says, Faith is the assurance which men have of the existence of the things which they have not seen, and the principal of action in all intelligent beings. What does that mean? It means just as the old primary song says faith is knowing the sun will rise. At 1:00 AM tonight I will have no possible way of seeing if the sun will rise in the morning, yet I know it will. It is the same for Gospel related things.

In Preach My Gospel Chapter (PMG) 6 Christlike Attributes  we read. "When you have faith in Christ, you believe in Him as the Son of God, the Only Begotten of the Father in the Flesh. You accept Him as your Savior and Redeemer and follow His teachings. You believe that your sins can be forgiven through His Atonement. Faith in Him means that you trust Him and are confident that He loves you." When we really think about it, what proof or what can we see and touch that proves that Jesus is the Son of God? What proves that we can be forgiven of our sins through His Atonement? Nothing PROVES it. However our Faith fulfills it. I know because I have Faith that the Atonement is real. I know that I can be forgiven of my sins, and I know I have.

In my mission I had my share of disappointments, short comings, and failures. However I learned that Faith is one important key to overcoming such things. I would tell myself, "Everyday work your hardest and to the best of your ability and knowledge. When you come home don't think thoughts of failure, think "I tried my best, I hope tomorrow is better." then ask Heavenly Father and exercise Faith that He will fulfill your Hope. When the next day comes, go out, and work your hardest and to the best of your ability and knowledge." In general, I would keep in mind to Hope that Heavenly Father would fulfill my Faith and have Faith that he would fulfill my Hopes. This would help me to keep in mind that Faith is a real thing, and it is a thing of Power. It has lead me to understand what Joseph Smith means by saying that Faith is the principal of action in all intelligent beings.

It was because I had Hope for a better day that I would work towards it, and I had Hope for a better day because I would exercise Faith in the Lords ability to lift me up. When I forgot these things, when I didn't have Hope or Faith I had bad days, I wouldn't be focused, we wouldn't find people to teach, when an appointment fell through I would feel lost and not know what to do. It is still the same today, when my Faith is on and present I am able to get more done, I'm able to focus on my homework, my work, or whatever else I might need to do. When it is absent I feel lost, alone, and useless. Again from PMG we read "Your faith will be manifest through diligence and work." again we are see. Faith is the principal of action in all intelligent beings. In the Lectures on Faith by Joseph Smith we read "If men were duly to consider themselves, and turn their thought and reflections to the operations of their own minds, they would readily discover that it is faith, and faith only, which is the moving cause of all action in them." Think about it for a moment, and see for yourself. I can tell you, the reason I get up in the morning and go to class (I really don't like school) is because I believe (have faith) that it will better me for the rest of my life. The reason I do anything is because I have faith that something will come of it.

In Matthew 17:20 we read "And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you." If we truly have Faith in something, nothing is impossible unto us. I believe, and this is only me speaking, that Faith is an all or nothing kind of thing. If we only have but a small amount, yet we put everything we have behind that small seed, we will have power to move mountains. Great Faith I would say is not the "amount" of Faith that we have, but how full heartedly we stand behind it, or what we are willing to take on Faith. It is not a question of "How much Faith we have." but of "What we truly have Faith in." As I said before, I have Faith that I can be forgiven of my sins, I know that I have received forgiveness before. However, I do not have Faith to move a mountain. It is not because I have Faith smaller then a mustard seed, it is because when I think about that, My faith leaves me. I let doubt and fear, the opposites of Faith and Hope enter my mind and take hold. It is because I do not have faith even in the amount of a mustard seed. This is what I believe is truly meant by having our Faith grow. Its not about quantity, its about quality.

God works according to the faith of His children. When we truly have faith, in a true principal, and for the good of others, the up lifting of the human family. For the accomplishment of the Lords mission, then nothing can be denied us. It was by Faith that the Brother of Jared saw the finger of the Lord. It was by Faith that Moses split the red sea. Faith can bring nothing for personal gain, or gratification only. However, for the lifting up of the human family, for the purpose of bringing about the immortality and eternal life of man, it can do all things. I say this in the name of Jesus Christ Amen.

A new Job!!

So, I got the job at the Radisson in Downtown Salt Lake City. That is freaking AWESOME!! and its freaking exciting. Sadly I will literally have near no social live during the week and on weekends very little of one. It will be worth it though. Making money, starting to get an in into what I want to do as a career. I do have to find somewhere to do my internship this summer now though, and I only have, I think, a month to find one. (internship applications are due in the first half of February I think).  Thats ok though, I'm sure I'll find one, or figure out when I can do one, maybe I'll wait till next fall, That would work too. I'll look hard and I'll find something. God will provide as I do my best to find one. Just like he provided me with this Job because, He knew I needed it to provide for myself. He opened the door and gave me the opportunity to walk through it. I really didn't think I would get a job there at all. The Radisson is pretty upper end. OH!! that is so AWESOME!! I still can't believe that I actually got the job! that is so cool. Next on my list of things to complete, Call my councilor and set up an appointment to speak about making my minor Journalism. Then, we will see where I will go from there. I love my major, I love life, I love the Lord. I love my family, and I love my friends =P. Sorry for the major lack of pictures from my end btw, I promise I'll start taking more... I'll get my camera up and running and put it my car so I'll be sure to remember =) haha.

The Attributes of Jesus Christ.

"a firm mind in every form of godliness" Moroni 7: 30, forms of godliness? the attributes of God? The attributes of Christ? I believe that the very attributes of Christ are forms of godliness and are the things we should emulate to become more like him.

First I believe we must have a desire to obtain any of these things. That desire I believe is a measure of our Virtue. Virtue is our innermost thoughts and desires. However, even if we are not inherently Virtuous we can become such. In Alma 32:27 it says "...even if you can no more than desire to believe, let this desire work in you, even until ye believe ..." this also applies here. If you no more than have a desire to be Virtuous, let the desire work in you. Pray for help to become Virtuous and God will grant your prayers.

Now once we are Virtuous, or we have a desire to do what is right and to be Moral, then comes the other Attributes.

Obedience is doing what you should, and what the Lord wants you to do, without knowing why.
Obedience will develop your Faith.
Faith. Faith is a hope for things which are not seen which are true.
If you have faith, you will have Hope.
Hope is trust, trust in God and his promises to the saints, and to you individually.
If you have Hope you will have Patience and Humility.
Patience is the ability to endure hardships and shortcomings in yourself and others.
Patience and Humility will lead you to Diligence.
Diligence is steady, consistent, earnest and energetic effort in doing the Lord's work.
Diligence will help us to obtain more Knowledge.
Knowledge is facts and information acquired though experience and education.
All of these things together will lead to Charity, Love and further Virtue. As well as reciprocating and enforcing each other.

Increased Charity will increase our desire to be Obedient as well as improve our motive for being Obedient. Obedience increases Faith, Faith increases Hope, Hope increases Patience and Humility. Patience and Humility will increase your Diligence and your Diligence will increase your Knowledge.

Charity is the most important of the Attributes of God. I know this to be true. In Moroni 7 45-47 we are plainly told so. "45 And charity suffereth long, and is kind, and envieth not, and is not puffed up, seeketh not her hown, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil, and rejoiceth not in iniquity but rejoiceth in the truth, beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. 46 Wherefore, my beloved brother, If he have not charity, ye are nothing, for charity never faileth. Wherefore, cleave unto charity, which is the greatest of all, for all things must fail-- 47 But charity is the pure love of Christ, and is endureth forever; and whoso is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him."

In 2 Nephi 25:29 Nephi explains exactly what we need to do to return to live with God. "29 And now behold, I say unto you that the right way is to believe in Christ, (Faith, Hope.) and deny him not;(Knowledge) and Christ is the Holy One of Israel; wherefore ye must bow down before him, (Humility) and Worship Him (Obedience) with all your Might, mind, and strength, and your whole soul; (Diligence) and if ye do this ye shall in nowise be cast out."

Now that is missing Virtue, Charity and Love, however, looking at all these things and as I have explained, if you have these other things you will have Virtue, Charity, and Love. They are all intertwined.

This to me is another example of how the Gospel is so intricate and deep yet at the same time so basic and simple. Now of course the order I have established here isn't the only way that these attributes effect and increase the others, for instance Faith also increases your Knowledge, as you increase in Faith and test it more and more. You will gain more and more Knowledge of Faith, the Gospel and many other things. This is just one pattern that I have seen. The fact of the matter is These Attributes are Key to becoming like our Father in Heaven and they each effect the others in turn. Now this is a simple overview of the separate Attributes of Jesus Christ. Over the next few weeks I will attempt to delve into each separately.

The Foundation of my Life.

So, just a quick note here, Every Sunday from here on out I'm going to post a "talk" or at least a collected and organized list of thoughts about the gospel. so, here it goes.

In the Book of Mormon we learn that Jesus Christ is the Foundation of any True christians life. helaman 5 :12 "And now, my sons, remember, remember that is is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundations; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall."

So, why is this? Why can we build upon this Foundation and not fall? Why should Christ be the Foundation of our lives?

First lets take a look at the nature of Gods love for us His children. In the Book of Mormon Nephi( 1 Nephi 11) sees and receives an interpretation of the vision of the Tree of Life. In verse 22 of this chapter we learn that the fruit of the Tree of Life is a representation of the "Love of God, which sheddeth itself abroad in the hearts of the children of men"
So what is this thing? This Love of God? Turning to the Bible we find in John 3:16 that "God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son." what does that tell us? What did Christ do for us that shows that God loves us. He did many things, a great many things. Healing, Teaching, Preaching, Being an example to for us. However these things are all secondary to the Atonement. The three separate events that make up the Atonement. The suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane, The giving up of His life on the cross, and His resurrection on the "first Easter morning". This is what is meant by God so loved he world. This is the Love of God that is spoken of in first Nephi 11. This is the love of God that sheddeth itself abroad in the hearts of men. It is the power of the Atonement; it is the gift of forgiveness from our sins. Is that not how we partake of the Atonement? Through repentance? the answer is Yes. Through obtaining forgiveness we partake of this thing and partaking of this thing brings the greatest joy anyone can ever experience. This I know through my own experience.

So what does this mean? God loved us He sent His Son, Jesus Christ to die for us and accomplish the Atonement. Why does that make Christ the Foundation of a Christians life?

In Alma 7 : 11-13 we read. "11 And he shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind, and this that the word might be fulfilled witch saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people. 12 And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities. 13 Now the Spirit knoweth all things; nevertheless the Son of God suffereth according to the flesh that he might take upon him the sins of his people, that he might blot out their transgressions according to the power of his deliverance; and now behold, this is the testimony which is in me."
So what does this tell us? simple. The Lord knows exactly what it feels like when you go out with all your friends to a party and one offers you alcohol and you have to stand tall and refuse. He knows what that took. He knows how easy it would have been to just give in. He knows exactly what everything in this life feels like. Christ suffered "according to the flesh" or in the flesh, suffered as we would suffer. So He knows how we feel and can comfort us or "succor" us. He knows, so He can sympathize. This is one reason why he should be the foundation of our lives. I know sometimes I feel down and out, depressed, or just, not good, whether your sick or your heart broken or your nervous, or whatever it might be Christ knows what your going through when quite possible no other person in the Universe does. He can comfort you, and He will if you but ask and believe. Isn't that just awesome??!?!?!? I think so.

Now in Verse 13 it says that the Spirit knoweth all things, implying that the spirit already knew how to succor his people according to their infirmities. However, Christ suffered for us so that he could take upon him our sins. For the purpose of blotting out our transgressions. This is implication of how the Atonement works, which I'm not going to get into here. I have my thoughts (and thats all they are "thoughts") on that, but that isn't what is important. I know the Atonement works and I know it is Real thats enough for me.

Jesus Christ suffered our pains, afflictions, sickness, and temptations, so we can rely on Him. That is why He should be the center focus and Foundation of our lives. Make Him the foundation of your lives! "How?" you might ask. It's plain in the 4th Article of Faith which reads, "We believe the first principals and ordinances of the Gospel are: First faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, repentance; third, baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands." Have Faith in the Atonement, Repent of your sins (Partake of the Atonement), Be baptized if you aren't already, and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. If you are already baptized and have the gift of the Holy Ghost. Simple. Keep your Faith Alive, keep it strong. Continue to Repent, and Partake of the Sacrament. It is a life-long cycle that builds a Foundation in Christ that, if we truly do these 5 things everyday and every week, we can never be pulled from!! Only by our choice can we step down from it.

Standing on this Firm Foundation it is our duty to search for those reaching up to take hold of their hands and pull them to this higher ground; to the same Foundation, the only Firm Foundation in the world, even in the universe!! Let look again at Helaman 5:12 "And now, my sons, remember, remember that is is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundations; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall." I have a testimony of this scripture, I know that Jesus Christ is the only sure foundation and there is no other! Not your friends, not your parents, not your children, not your husbands, not your wives, not even President Thomas S. Monson is a firm foundation. There is only one, and that is Jesus Christ. Only when a husband and wife are built upon that foundation will they be "no longer twain, but be one flesh." Only when we as a church are all built upon that foundation will we be the children of God, the people of Zion, of one heart and one mind. Only then will we be ready to receive Jesus Christ at His Second Coming. And as we build on this Foundation, others will see our works, which are the works of our Father in Heaven. Then they will want to know Jesus Christ because they know us! Of these things I testify in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
